Suffering the loss of children, born and unborn, has unmoored many of us at times. Let us turn to Mary for healing, recalling her indelible example of endurance, without losing her foundation.
Who was Mary? Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the most beloved and revered woman in the Bible. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary in Nazareth to announce that she would miraculously conceive a son through the Holy Spirit. ("Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." - Luke 1:38) Along with her husband, Joseph, she traveled to Bethlehem, where she gave birth to Jesus in a manger. She is recorded as being present at major milestones, including Jesus' first miracle at the wedding in Cana and his crucifixion in Jerusalem. Today, she remains a global symbol of humility, faith, and maternal compassion.
Modern women can draw several powerful lessons from Mary’s life, particularly regarding resilience through grief, faith, and internal reflection.
1. Trusting the Process
Mary’s "yes" to the angel Gabriel came with immense social risk and uncertainty. Her example encourages moving forward with conviction even when the full path isn't clear.
2. The Power of Presence
From the manger to the cross, Mary was consistently present. She teaches the value of "showing up" for others during both the highest joys and the deepest sorrows.
3. Reflective Living
Scripture often mentions that Mary "pondered these things in her heart." In a fast-paced world, her habit of internal reflection and mindfulness is a reminder to process life deeply rather than just reacting to it.
4. Resilience through Grief
Having witnessed the suffering of her child, Mary is a symbol of endurance. She represents the strength found in surviving life's most difficult trials without losing one's foundation.
5. Advocacy and Action
At the wedding in Cana, she was the one who noticed a need and prompted action ("Do whatever he tells you.” -John 2:5). This highlights a leadership style based on intuition, service, and empowering others.
